I taught for 10 years in a public school and I have been a father for 16 years, so I have attended a few meetings on the assessment of kids’ abilities. This song was written in response to an experience I had while attending one of these meetings at school. According to the charts and compared to others kids their age, some children were labeled as under par. I understand the need for assessing students in order to be able to understand each one’s strengths and weaknesses. Yet, on the way home I was bothered by some of the comments that were made in the meeting. I kept asking myself, “What does God say about them”? Some may not be good at math or English, but do they work hard, and do they do their best with what God has given them. I then started thinking about how success in society is sometimes reflected by money, yet how does God measure success? That night I started writing “As You Are”, for all kids and adults who question their abilities to succeed.
lyrics
Verse 1
The World Says that you’ll never be anyone
That you’ll never do anything at all with your life
And some say that you’re just not up to par
According to the charts you have failed
Ask yourself before you buy what they claim
Chorus
What does God say, What does God do
He says, Do not be ashamed that’s how I made you
Takes you to his mirror, dries up your tears
And He Says Your Beautiful, So beautiful
And I love you As you Are, As you are
Verse 2
The world Says I am a self made man
That I don’t need to understand at all God’s Way’s
And Some say, a million bucks is all you need
It’ll bring all the joy and peace you need in your life
Ask Yourself before you buy what they claim
Chorus
What does God say, What does God do
He says, spread the love within that’s why I made you
Shows you what you need, so you can live in peace
And He Says Your Beautiful, So beautiful
And I love you As you Are, As you are
Bridge
When the world sees bad, God sees good
When some say you can’t, God says you could
If you trust in me, trust in me.
The World Says six months is all you have to live
We can’t find a cure for this, we have tried
What does God say, What does God do
He says, show the whole world the faith I gave you
Takes you to his mirror, Erases all your fears
And He Says Your Beautiful, So beautiful
And I love you As you Are, As you are
Yes He loves you as you are
